Client: Lenovo Legion (EMEA)
Services: Community strategy, platform, management, engagement & campaigns

Lenovo Legion wanted more than “another gaming forum”. They needed a brand-owned space across EMEA that felt welcoming in a notoriously toxic category,  and that could reliably support big campaigns, sponsorships and launches. Since launching in 2021, the Legion community has become a flagship example of how a brand community can be both wholesome and high-performing.

The Challenge

Launching a New Gaming Community Across EMEA

Gaming is crowded and often combative. Lenovo Legion needed to:

  • Create a warm, inclusive space that stood out from typical toxic gaming hubs
  • Give regional marketers a dependable channel to run campaigns, events and sponsorships
  • Connect day-to-day conversation to clear brand and commercial goals
What we did…

Strategy & Launch Planning

Before building anything, we ran a Discovery and strategy phase using the 5 Elements System for Community Success. Together with Lenovo we:

  • Defined the purpose and positioning of the community in a saturated gaming market.
  • Aligned on audiences, roles and success metrics across multiple EMEA markets

Designed a launch plan that allowed Lenovo to open four territories at once, then rapidly expand to seven.

The Standing on Giants team have been a supportive partner throughout the process. They listen to feedback and turn requests into reality.

A rare gaming space…

Community Management

The Legion community is known internally as a surprisingly wholesome gaming space:

  • Dedicated Community Managers welcome new members with DM outreach and gentle onboarding
  • Clear tone, guidelines and escalation flows keep discussions constructive
  • Over time, positive behaviour has become self-reinforcing, so the moderation queue is mostly spam and auto-flags – not arguments
  • Constructive gaming communities are particularly unusual, as many hubs are dominated by conflict and toxicity. Here, members describe it as warm, welcoming and drama-free.
Community Powered Campaign Engine

Supporting marketing campaigns globally

Once the foundation was in place, the community became a campaign engine for Lenovo Legion:

  • Her Legion: an annual, multi-market program championing women and under-represented gamers, with community-first content, challenges and recognition
  • Gamified “Battle Pass” activations: daily or weekly challenges that reward log-ins with points, badges and sometimes physical prizes  driving repeat engagement in key regions
  • Game nights: regular “game together” events (e.g. a Polish Fortnite tournament now in its 10th+ iteration, with 120+ weekly sign-ups)
From streamers to esports

Creators and Sponsorship Collabs

  • Esports and sponsorships: dedicated community hubs for major events like the esports world cup global, with prediction widgets, content threads and recap coverage
  • Influencer and Creator collaboration: integrations with streamers and esports organisations (e.g. G2 Esports) so that influencer activity drives members back into the brand-owned community
The Results

A Winning Gaming Community

Lenovo Legion now has:

  • A highly engaged, multi-language flagship community for EMEA
  • A safe, welcoming gaming environment that reflects the brand and attracts loyal fans
  • A repeatable playbook for campaigns, events and sponsorships,  from inclusive initiatives like Her Legion to global esports partnerships
  • A long-term partner continuously optimising strategy, content and operations as Legion grows
